Upcoming Activities

We will continue our ongoing activities to promote the zone through educational programs, meetings with experts, government officials and a campaign in Israel. We will involve arms control, verification and international legal experts in a series of themed roundtables throughout 2019 focusing on finding inclusive policy responses to unresolved problems. We are advancing plans for the following:

January 2019 – London, UK: Strategy session on the foundational needs of the METO Project to establish its operational structure.

February 2019 – Global: An on-line roundtable with select experts who are part of the METO Project steering community and advisory group to improve the text of the Draft Treaty and to formulate strategy for reasoned technical and policy approaches to creating the zone.

March 2019: Three on-line roundtables with select experts who are part of the METO steering community and advisory group:

  • Improving the text of the draft treaty and formulating strategy for sound technical and policy approaches to realizing the Zone.
  • The Zone and the 2020 NPT.
  • METO and the November UN Conference in New York on the Zone (the Arab Proposal).

April 2019 – Kyrenia, Cyprus: A roundtable with a combination of regional and international experts and policy makers on the topic of regional security and WMD disarmament.

May 2019 – New York, USA: A side event at the NPT Preparatory Committee to further discuss the draft text, and plans for extensive discussions with diplomatic delegations.

June 2019 – Tel Aviv, Israel: Israel and the NPT – Towards a final document in the 2020 NPT Review Conference.

July 2019 – [TBD]:  Expert-level workshop focused on the topic of declaration, dismantling, destruction or conversion of weapons of mass destruction.

August 2019 – Nicosia, Cyprus: First METO Project seminar for regional experts and students to establish a capacity building project for the second layer of verification in the Middle East.

September 2019 – [TBD]: A roundtable with regional and international experts on mechanisms for the treaty’s entry into force and depositary functions. This session will also look into practical capacity building measures to shore up trust and engagement by stakeholders.

October 2019 – New York, USA: Side event at the UNGA First Committee to launch the capacity-building project initiated at the METO Project seminar by bringing scholars and diplomats from the zone for shared learning and mock negotiations.

November 2019 – New York, USA: Promotion of the draft treaty and METO at the UN Conference on a WMD Free Zone in the Middle East (The Arab Proposal)

November 2019 – The Hague, Netherlands: Side event at the CWC CSP-24 (24th Conference of States Parties) to advance the capacity-building project initiated at the METO seminar by bringing scholars and diplomats from the zone for shared learning and mock negotiations.

December 2019 – Geneva, Switzerland: A side event and advocacy at the Biological Weapons Conventions (BWC) Meeting of State Parties.
